Pupils’ social action raises funds for Field Lane

Updated: Oct 18, 2022

Pupils from the Oasis Academy in Coulsdon, Surrey took part in First Give, a charity that supports students to learn about social issues in their community and one class was awarded a £1,000 donation for their work supporting Field Lane. Through the First Give programme each class in the year group choose charities that they want to support through social action. One class was represented by year 10 students, Taleen, Josh, Leah, and Cassie, who chose their social action to improve quality of life.

They said, “We chose this because we believe everyone should have equal opportunities in life and should not feel that they are at a disadvantage only because of a disability or learning difficulty.”

They then set about raising money and awareness through lots of different, fun activities. These included: a bake competition and sale, a quiz, ‘bring anything in a backpack’ day, and a wheelchair race to help people understand more about the difficulties of people with disabilities encounter.

This award and the additional money raised will make a big difference to the lives of our clients, helping them to lead fulfilling and independent lives.

Georgia from First Give said: “It’s been an absolute pleasure working with Oasis Coulsdon students – they’re enthusiastic, keen to learn and passionate. Students across the whole year group worked hard, but ultimately the class supporting Field Lane wowed the judges enough to win the First Give grant. Students made a presentation about Field Lane and talked about the social action they did to support the charity.”
