Ash Wednesday, which is on 5 March this year, marks that start of Lent, an important part of the Christian calendar. Christians believe that the 40 days before Easter, called Lent, mark the time that Jesus spent fasting in the desert. It is a time of reflection and of asking for forgiveness. Christians spend the time preparing to celebrate Jesus's resurrection at the feast of Easter, which comes at the very end of Lent. Traditionally, Lent was spent praying and fasting.
Christians still mark the days of Lent by giving up something that they really enjoy, such as chocolate, coffee or cake. Others decide to take up something and to give back, like helping more with chores at home or doing nice things for family and friends. This year, Lent starts on Wednesday 5 March and leads to Easter, when it ends, on Sunday 20 April.
