Many of the people we support enjoy expressing their thoughts and feelings through arts & crafts.
May is Mental Health Month, a time to raise awareness of the impact of mental health on our lives. At Field Lane we prioritise good mental health as part of our approach to care. We support people with learning disabilities; some are also autistic and have other behavioural challenges. We encourage activities that benefit mental health and help the people we support to find positive coping strategies.
We love going on social outings, whether it’s going to the theatre, a day at the seaside, or a trip to the bowling alley. These activities can help by preventing people from feeling isolated, offering an opportunity to build friendships in a relaxed, fun setting. It helps people to feel connected, comfortable, and supported while enjoying some quality time with others. Playing or watching sport is another way to connect with others and feel part of a team. It also helps boost mood, reduce stress, and build confidence.
That connection is all important for better mental health, as is finding ways to express thoughts and feelings. With many of the people we support having limited verbal communication, art therapy is a great way for them to express themselves through painting or crafting. It helps them to share their feelings and ideas in a creative and calming way.
More home-based activities, such as cooking, enable the people we support to develop skills, enjoy preparing their own meals, and boost confidence and independence. Some people simply enjoy having a chat and sharing a cup of tea at home. It’s a simple, yet meaningful way to connect, relax, and feel supported in a familiar setting.
Ultimately, being able to make connections, develop skills and build confidence leads to the people we support living more independent and fulfilling lives.
