My son’s story
J’s life at Badgers
For most people making choices is simple and part of everyday life. But, for J, my son, who has severe learning difficulties, making choices is far from straightforward. During the years he has lived at Badgers a careful profile has been built up. His likes and dislikes have been carefully observed, as have his preferences and more importantly his needs.
The high level of staff continuity, the building of personal relationships and the dedication of his carers help 'J' to understand what is happening around him. Using visual aids and straightforward encouragement enables him to make his choices day by day. Like the rest of us not all choices are wise, for example eating the dessert before the main course at mealtimes, much to the despair of Badgers chefs and his carers!
He is treated with dignity and respect. He has the freedom to choose when he gets up and when he goes to bed, where he sits, what he plays with, what he eats and even the colour of his car! For J his learning curve will continue all the time he lives at Badgers. His mum, dad, sister and teenage nephews all visit regularly, sharing in the family atmosphere of his home. We are all so happy that he lives at Badgers.
T, J’s father.
